Richard A. Dunn was crying, his voice wavering as he confided that hed done something wrong and needed to get out of town, a business associate told police.Dunn told detectives himself that hed gotten drunk and gashed his head on the pavement of a parking lot last Wednesday, blacking out and somehow making it home, according to court papers. But he denied knowing anything about the scratched and bruised 6yearold boy found the next day in his Kingsgate apartment, his arms tied behind his back.Yesterday, King County prosecutors charged Dunn with firstdegree kidnapping. The 39yearold businessman remains in jail in lieu of $1 million bail. The boy, 6yearold Davry Chen, was shaken but not seriously hurt. Investigators say he was gagged with a necktie, whipped with a belt and held captive for almost 24 hours, though they do not believe he was sexually assaulted. The kidnapping of a young child by a stranger is an extremely rare crime, but one that strikes fear in the heart of every parent, Prosecutor Norm Maleng said yesterday.Dunn would face a standard sentence of about four to six years in prison if convicted, though Maleng said he will consider asking for a stiffer penalty. He will also consider adding a charge for the child pornography police say they found in Dunns apartment.Dunn is scheduled to be arraigned July 6 in King County Superior Court.Yesterday, police were still searching for a companion of Dunns, who was leasing the apartment and who owns the vehicle police say Dunn had been driving. They hadnt found anyone who had seen the man, Brandon Walcutt, in the past few weeks. But they had no immediate reason to believe Walcutt was involved in the kidnapping or was a victim of foul play, according to sheriffs spokesman John Urquhart, who said the 31yearold man had fought with Dunn and run off before.Davrys disappearance motivated hundreds of local residents to help search for the boy. A neighbor recognized Dunn from a composite sketch, and another identified the vehicle he was driving, according to court papers.Police say a conspicuous wound on Dunns forehead helped witnesses, including two other young boys, help police identify him. He gave two explanations for the injury, according to investigators: a recent car crash and a liquorinduced fall outside a Federal Way restaurant.Davry told police his kidnapper had a cross marking his forehead, called him a chicken and beat him with a belt. Police found the boy on a bed in the master bedroom of the abandoned apartment Thursday evening, a block from the complex where Davry lives with his family.
